From what you've said about the 'Young Adult' categorisation, I'm now confused about how 'New Adult' books fit into the marketing scheme of things. Or is it just best to ignore the subtleties?

Do you mean general adult fiction? They focus a lot on genre and subgenre ie Crime, mystery, thriller etc.

No. Apparently there's a New Adult marketing term. So 'NA' as opposed to 'YA'. Does my head in as my main characters are aged 17 to 25.

Oh no! Really? We don't need more categorisation in this case. I thought young adult rolled really nicely into general adult.

Oo, I've got it. Young adult is American Pie. New Adult is American Pie: The wedding.

17 is the very end of YA as the progression to college, first home, marriage, career is after that. Tricky one for you to market in that respect however, Amazon doesn't have a "new adult" category yet so I'm not worried yet 😂

I'm afraid American Pie is for me the Don Mclean song. But I have a distant Porky's memory. Probably best I just keep writing...

Wonderful! Thank you for the essay.

I must confess that The Tempest is one of the few works of Shakespeare that I have not read, to my shame. Now, I am faced with a dilemma: do I read Oceanus or The Tempest first?

It's a short play, possibly the shortest. I think it's over in 4 acts. I don't feel that reading the play is essential but it might be nice to read both and compare? Either way works, as Oceanus is a story in itself 😁

I will read both, but finish Oceanus first. I just need to find more time 😅

28 hour days would be a good start. I'm currently strapped for time and it's messing with my writing and reading. I don't know what to do with the half an hour I've been given!

I enjoyed this breakdown of what inspired you to write your novel and some background into your characters. This sounds like a compelling book. Look forward to reading it.

Thanks for reading John! I might do more in future. I did spend a lot of time with these characters, after all 😄

I appreciate this post! I just got your book in the mail yesterday, and I've never read The Tempest. I can't wait to break into it!

Thank you very much. I don't think The Tempest is essential background knowledge for it, as it's its own story, but people might like to compare. It's not essential though. I would like to think that Oceanus is a story in itself. 😁

Shakespeare is full of "your mum" jokes and sex jokes. I highly recommend it. My plan is to write an entire universe of Sci fi books based on Shakespeare classics. He's the best. He really is.
